Colorado Springs, CO: The Colorado Department of Corrections Education Department at Four Mile Correctional Center (FMCC) recently completed the first Iron Workers Union 847, Gladiator Training. Ten offenders completed the 40 hour intensive and physically demanding training. With the recent construction boom in many states, Ironworkers Union 847 is struggling to find skilled employees to meet these demands. As part of the industry’s need for employees, and the push for second chances, Iron Workers Union 847 contacted the Department of Correction to discuss possible training and employment opportunities for offenders. The program was made possible by the passage of House Bill 12-1223 which prescribed Achievement Earned Time (AET) for offenders completing educational programs. Through the collaboration of Ironworkers Union 847, the Department of Education, and Four-mile Correctional Facility offenders were offered this demanding and intensive training to promote job opportunities within this technical field. The Gladiator Program is a week-long (40 hour), non-paid program offered by the Colorado Department of Corrections. It focuses on skill building for offenders who are approaching re-entry. This training provides offenders the opportunity to receive industry specific skills in safety, re-bar tying, bar identification, torch and carrying requirements. Upon completion of this training, offenders will have the opportunity to interview for employment within the union or be recommended for local job sites with assistance from Iron Workers Union 847. |
