| W.Va. pushes spending in corrections rather than prisons |

The U.S. Department of Education has released a report last week that shows all states have accelerated their spending on prisons more than they have on public education. And West Virginia is one state that has come close to leading the nation in its push to pour more money into corrections. According to the Dept. of Education report, West Virginia spent 58 percent more on public education in the 2012-13 school year than it did in the 1979-80 school year. However, the state spent 483 percent more in that period for prisons and regional jails. According to The Charleston Gazette-Mail, the Mountain State still spends more on education than it does on prisons, but the gap is closing — and it’s closing faster than any other state.
