| Surge in Michigan inmate assaults drops off in 2015 |

LANSING — The number of assaults on inmates housed in state prisons fell last year, but officials say it is too early to determine whether a seven-year surge in violence, during which reported assaults on state inmates rose 82% between 2007 and 2014, has begun to reverse itself. Inmate assault numbers peaked in 2014, when there were 1,350 total assaults on inmates, of which 115 were the most serious type, resulting in death or hospitalization beyond emergency treatment, records show. Recently released records show that in 2015, the number of assaults dropped by 14%, to 1,159, while the most serious assaults plunged 30%, to 65. But the 2015 numbers are still higher than what was recorded in all but two years since 2007, and legislative Corrections Ombudsman Keith Barber, whose office last year flagged the rising assault numbers, said it's too early to tell if last year was an outlier.
