| DOC anticipates possible facility closures with signing of new crime bill |

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Alaska’s governor signed into law Senate Bill 91 Monday. It’s a new piece of legislation the state’s Corrections Commissioner calls a landmark for the state. “Reduce the prison population, keep people out of the system that don’t need to be deeper in the system and as a byproduct of that should save money once you get facilities ramped down,” said Commissioner Dean Williams. The bill creates a Pretrial Services Division under the Department of Corrections, “It essentially takes a look at trying to address placement and a level of threat to public safety placing the defendant in a treatment program or facility that provides for what their issues are,” said Dennis Johnson with Alaska Pretrial Services, a company that provides electronic monitoring and sobriety services.
