Two weeks after former Canterbury police chief John LaRoche was acquitted of sexual assault, the town announced it has hired a new part-time police chief. Hooksett police Lt. Michael Labrecque will assume the post Aug. 1. He will be asked to rebuild the department that was criticized for a lack of professionalism and leadership. LaRoche was placed on unpaid administrative leave at his own request last summer and formally resigned from his full-time position in January. The Merrimack County Sheriff’s Office has helped oversee the Canterbury department’s operations since LaRoche’s exit. Labrecque will be working with the sheriff’s office and transitioning into the department with its current officers. The department currently employs three officers, two full-time and one part-time. While LaRoche prepared for trial, residents in Canterbury called for an overhaul of the department, with some even organizing a petition to disband it completely. Read More. |
