Kingman prison riot: New management group learned from last year’s mistakes |

After a riot on July 4, 2015, caused more than $2 million in damage and injured more than a dozen staff and inmates, Arizona State Prison warden Jeff Wrigley knows the responsibility of his position. Wrigley took over as the Kingman prison’s warden in December, on behalf of Florida-based prison management company, Geo Group Inc. Geo Group’s contract with the Arizona Department of Corrections followed last year’s riot, when Arizona investigators found the previous management company, Management & Training Corp (MTC), to have been at least partially responsible for failing to prevent the incident. Unrest within the prison may have begun last year when a corrections officer allegedly used excessive force against one of the prison’s inmates, according to an investigation of the prison after the incident. The inmate, who was serving a five year sentence on charges of theft and drug paraphernalia, was beaten during an altercation with a corrections officer, and later died from his injuries.
