Inmate released after clerical error turns himself in, Sheriff's Office says

A State Department of Corrections inmate is back in custody after a clerical error at Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office resulted in his release last month, according to the OPSO Monday (July 18).

Authorities said Ervin New, 27, was at the Orleans Justice Center June 28 awaiting a hearing on a charge of aggravated battery. New was already in state prison on simple burglary and home invasion charges, and authorities said he accepted a plea bargain at his hearing to be sentenced to six months with credit for time served.

New, however, was mistakenly released from OPSO's Intake and Processing Center, authorities said. The Sheriff's Office discovered the error last week at a supervisory review of recent bookings.
