| State blames correctional officer shortage on sick time |

BALTIMORE —Do Maryland corrections officers get too much sick time? There's a debate over what some call a generous union contract and the impact that it may have on the cost to keep the state's prison system fully staffed. The state has nearly 7,000 corrections officers working in prisons and detention facilities around Maryland. But on any given day, according to speadsheets obtained by the 11 News I-Team from the prison system, as much as 10 percent of the workforce is out sick, using a sick leave policy that state officials said poses a challenge to keeping the system fully staffed. "We, for staffing purposes, assume that each individual corrections officer will utilize 15 sick-leave days per year," said Gary McLhinney, director of the Office of Professional Standards at the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. That's three weeks of sick leave in addition to vacation time. McLhinney points to the union contract, which allows corrections officers up to five days of sick leave before requiring a doctor's note, and they can do that three times a year. Read More. |
