Family says slain Abilene corrections officer cared about inmates

ABILENE, Texas -

The family of Abilene corrections officer Mari Johnson say she was kind and showed empathy to the inmates.

Johnson was found dead early Saturday morning, and a 21-year-old inmate was named a suspect in her murder.

“My mom was such a great person,” said Nicholas Johnson, her son. “I don’t understand how this could happen to someone so sweet.”

Nicholas said Mari had recently complained about her unit at the French Robertson Unit being understaffed. He fears that she had been left alone with inmates at the time of her attack.
