ELOY — Arizona is sending its first group of inmates to a privately operated prison as part of an expansion project meant to alleviate prison crowding. The Arizona Republic reports that the 25 inmates moved into the Red Rock Correctional Center in Eloy on Tuesday. The state Department of Corrections plans to transfer 1,000 medium-custody inmates to southern Pinal County by January. The Corrections Corporation of America says it is spending $40 million on Red Rock, including building a new dormitory, renovating cells and expanding recreation areas. The facility once housed inmates from other states but began taking Arizona inmates in January 2014. The state agreed to a 20-year contract with the corrections company last year. The Tennessee-based CCA is projected to earn at least $21 million a year on the deal. Read More. |
