CHICAGO -- A Cook County Jail detainee briefly escaped custody outside of a courthouse Thursday afternoon, prompting a sheriff's officer to open fire in the Fuller Park neighborhood on the South Side.

About 4:30 p.m., 18-year-old Jordan Cook was waiting to board a Cook County Department of Corrections bus outside the county courthouse at 155 W. 51st St., when he broke out of line and ran away, according to Sophia Ansari, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

During the pursuit, a sheriff's officer fired two shots, but no one was injured, Ansari said.

Chicago police officers arrested the man about 4:40 p.m. near West 51st and South State streets, police said.
