An Oregon State Penitentiary inmate died unexpectedly Saturday. Inmate Tommie Norton, 55, had been taken to a hospital for medical care, and was pronounced dead at 11:55 a.m. Saturday, according to a Department of Corrections news release. Norton was in the penitentiary on one count of identity theft out of Clackamas County and was scheduled for release in 2018. The penitentiary was put on lockdown Friday after fights involving more than 150 inmates broke out in the afternoon and continued into Saturday, according to a statement from the Department of Corrections. In July, One inmate died and at least five others were hospitalized with seizure-like symptoms after using a chemical-based synthetic marijuana known as Spice, which had apparently been smuggled into the prison.
