| Putting an end to gang violence conference concludes |

IRMO, SC (WACH) - A three-day conference aimed at fighting gang crime came to a close Wednesday afternoon after nearly 400 law enforcement officers received training on how to deal with gang culture across the country. The conference was hosted by the South Carolina Department of Corrections at Midlands Technical College in Irmo. It addressed the violent impact gang culture has on a community and prison systems. Officers learned how to effectively identify and document violent street gangs. The conference included a panel discussion with gang specialists who talked about how to prevent and intervene where gang activity occurs. The annual conference allowed law enforcement and corrections officers to talk about gang activity and the resources they need to fight it, but some say the game is changing. Many gangs have gone from graffiti tagging to social media and are getting into white collar crime. Captain Vince Goggins with the Midlands Gang Task Force says even with the change of crime, the brand of violence they bring isn't changing. Read More. |
