The statistics tell a tragedy — deaths involving heroin more than tripled nationwide from 2010 (3,036) to 2014 (10,574), faster than any other illicit drug. The number of people who say they use the drug nearly tripled from 2007 (161,000) to 2014 (435,000), according to that Drug Enforcement Administration study on U.S. heroin use. Those figures, as heroin users face a rotating door of crime and jail, are reasons why a new monthly injection that blocks its euphoric effects was added in March to addiction counseling during and after sentences served in the Duval County jail.
