Newberry prisoner to face additional charges relating to escape

NEWBERRY, MI-- A prisoner who briefly escaped from the Newberry Correctional Facility early Tuesday has been transferred to a higher security prison and awaits formal charges.

Alize Montague, 19, climbed the facility’s fence just after 2 a.m. Staff immediately contacted local authorities and a Department of Corrections vehicle gave chase. Troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace Posts, officers with the U.S. Border Patrol, and the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department searched the area.

Montague was arrested by Michigan State Police outside a hotel about a mile from the prison after a clerk called 911. He was back in custody by 3:30 a.m.
