An inmate from Arkansas allegedly stole a car, wrecked it in Mississippi during a high-speed chase, then jumped into a police cruiser before finally being apprehended last Wednesday.
Authorities said Melvin Wead was a trustee at the Lake Village, Ark., jail.
He was on a cigarette break at 4 a.m. when he allegedly made his escape in a stolen car.
Authorities said Wead drove the car hundreds of miles into Mississippi, where authorities spotted him a few hours later. Wead allegedly wrecked the car, and while authorities attempted to arrest him, he managed to break away and steal a police cruiser, police said.
Wead was finally apprehended a short time later.
Capt. Bob Graham, of the Lake Village Police Department, said investigators are trying to find out why Wead was allowed outside the jail in the early morning hours. Graham said Wead did odd jobs at the jail and had been a model prisoner until his escape.
Wead was serving 10 years in jail for aggravated robbery. He now faces escape and auto theft charges in Arkansas.
