| Detention supervisor suspended after escape |

A Lantz Lurry (Ark.) Juvenile Detention Center supervisor was put on suspension without pay as a result of a juvenile's escape two weeks ago that was not discovered until the 14-year-old detainee's mother notified officials, said Helen Andrews, the jail administrator. Andrews made the announcement at the Miller County Juvenile Detention Center Committee before the monthly Quorum Court meeting last Monday night at the Miller County Courthouse. While one of the supervisors is suspended, she said detention workers are covering some of the suspended supervisor's shifts and there are still two other supervisors who run the night shift. Andrews said currently the juvenile-adult ration is 12 juveniles to 1 one adult during the day shifts, and 16 juveniles to 1 adult during nights. District 3 Justice of the Peace Bobby Ferguson, who is also the chairman of the committee, said because of recent events, problems with JDC need to be addressed, better now than later. He said part of the problems, which were on a list of priorities that Andrew made, were due to funding. But, Ferguson said before money can be spent for improvements an operational cost analysis needs to be done. In dealing with training, Ferguson asked Miller County Sheriff H.L. Phillips how the sheriff's office handles training. Phillips said they do in-house training, which takes 44 hours. He said in the past he has extended an invitation to JDC training but no one has ever come. Andrews addressed this comment and said some people just don't show up. With the suspended supervisor, it was also the case of a supervisor admitting he asked another juvenile about the juvenile who escaped, rather than making sure the juvenile was present. |
