Nashville-based Corrections Corporation of America is reported among applicants wanting to take over management of the Memphis, Tenn., jail, the largest local lockup in the state. Shelby County officials are thinking about putting the jail and the county penal farm under private management. The Commercial Appeal newspaper reported last week that C-C-A has proposed paying the county 30 (M) million dollars and building a 200 (M) million dollar jail for 36-hundred inmates in exchange for a 50-year management contract. The proposal calls for putting inmates from the downtown jail and the county penal farm in the new facility. |
