| Groundbreaking Monday on Kerr County Jail expansion |

Contractors are about to start work on the renovation and expansion of the Kerr County Jail, a $15 million project that carries the potential challenge of working around inmates. “We’ve accomplished major renovations in an occupied (correctional) facility before. You can imagine the chaos,” Wayne Gondeck, the project architect, told Kerr County Commissioners on Monday. “My recommendation is to vacate the facility.” That decision can be put off, since the project’s first phase calls for adding a new wing to the existing 192-bed jail that will include 144 more jail beds, a visitation area and a records storage room. Once that work is completed in roughly a year, the old jail cells will be upgraded, the existing kitchen, laundry and dispatch areas will be expanded and new restrooms will be added. Read More. |
