| Another good move by prisons chief |

Idaho Department of Correction Director Kevin Kempf hasn’t been letting any grass grow beneath his feet since taking the job. And from what we’ve seen, he’s making one good move after another. We’ve all seen those movies where the really bad inmates are put in “the hole” — or solitary confinement — for extended periods of time for bad behavior. While that might serve as extra incentive to behave for the inmates and can help protect the others from possible violence, long stretches of time with little to no human interaction just isn’t good for most human beings. We are, by nature, social creatures. Depriving people of human interaction for months has been proven to have adverse psychological effects even on law-abiding citizens. It’s even more of a concern for people convicted of crimes, and assuming they’re not on Death Row or aren’t serving life sentences without parole, they’re going to be released back into society at some point. Regardless of how despicable their crimes were, we have a vested interest in rehabilitating them so they can become law-abiding, productive citizens when they’re released. The higher the recidivism rate, the more we spend on costs to lock them back up, and the higher our crime rates go. Read More. |
