A prisoner who was transported to Monroe, La., to take his GED test was recaptured in about 15 minutes after breaking away from his officers. Chad Ryder, 17, of Ruston, had been brought from the Union Parish Detention Center last Thursday to take the equivalency test for a high school degree when he took off while getting out of van, said Union Parish jail Warden Johnny Sumlin. Ryder managed to run several blocks before an officer caught him, Sumlin said. The Union Parish Detention Center allows prisoners to take classes to prepare for the high school equivalency test. Two officers were transporting five prisoners to take the test in Monroe when the escape occurred, he said. "That's the first attempt we've ever had during this," Sumlin said. Ryder was serving a two-year sentence for simple burglary. He was booked with escape, which carries up to five years. Ryder did not take the test. |
