Judge cleared in quadriplegic inmate's death

A judicial panel has cleared a D.C. Superior Court judge of misconduct in the death of a quadriplegic man she sent to a D.C. Jail for 10 days.
Jonathan Magbie died last September while serving a sentence for marijuana possession. He had been taken to the hospital twice for severe medical problems.
The Commission on Judicial Disabilities and Tenure found that Judge Judith Retchin made only a "limited and uninformed" inquiry about Magbie's medical needs before ordering the sentence. But the panel concluded that she acted within the law and made an effort to ensure that the jail would be able to care for him.
The findings were reported in The Washington Post.
An earlier investigation by the D.C. Department of Health faulted Greater Southeast Community Hospital for failing to provide adequate care to Magbie.
The Office of the Inspector General is examining the actions of the jail staff.
