Inmates flooding courts with frivolous lawsuits

Dozens of Bay State inmates have filed hundreds of pleadings as part of frivolous lawsuits that are clogging the courts and turning judges into prisoner “pen pals” — according to one jurist and a top lawyer who are both clamoring for changes in what they call a “broken” system.

Superior Court Justice Dennis Curran found that convicted murderer Emory Snell had filed 91 separate actions in state and federal courts and 195 appeals for a total of 285 cases. In a separate suit brought by inmate Alex Reis against a nonprofit that assists prisons, Curran found that the inmate filed 720 pleadings, requiring 244 decisions by judges.
