Aging Northampton County Prison among Pennsylvania's costliest jails to operate

EASTON – Northampton County leaders have long known they've needed to replace their 145-year-old monolith of a jail, but the political and financial costs have proven too high to stomach.

But newly released state data show the decision to hold off on a new jail comes at a cost, too.

According to statistics released Aug. 18 by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Northampton County's prison system was among the costliest in the state last year. The county spent an average of $107.78 per inmate per day, the report shows, ranking it 10th among the 59 counties that reported data. The state average was $78.30.

Daniel Keen, Northampton County's director of corrections, blamed much of the costs on the physical design of the prison. While it's been expanded over the decades, the historic, castle-like portions of prison date to 1871. The extra staffing and maintenance required to monitor and maintain prisoner safety is driving up the cost, he said.
