Two inmates at the Allegheny County (Pa.) Jail died after falling ill Sunday and a third inmate was hospitalized, jail officials said. The two women reported symptoms including coughing, congestion and spitting up blood on Sunday and died shortly afterward, according to Warden Ramon Rustin and Allegheny County health officials. Another woman with similar symptoms was taken to a hospital Monday morning. Pittsburgh television station KDKA-TV reported that jail officials said the two women were cleaning a shower and had apparently mixed chlorine and ammonia, which can produce chlorine gas. Rustin said he didn't know what sickened the inmates and was awaiting the results of an autopsy. Amy Sartori, 31, of Pittsburgh, died Sunday evening at a Pittsburgh hospital. The other dead woman was described as being in her late 40s or early 50s, according to the Allegheny County Coroner's Office. |
