| Arsonist who killed 87 in Happy Land club fire dies in prison |

The man who killed 87 people in the infamous Happy Land social club fire in 1990 died in an upstate hospital on Tuesday, officials said. Julio Gonzalez, 61, was serving a 25 years to life sentence at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., according to Thomas Mailey, a spokesman for the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. He was pronounced dead at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh at 11:30 a.m. His official cause of death will be determined by the Clinton County Medical Examiner’s office.
