A Stony Mountain Institution inmate who was serving time for driving-related offences, including impaired driving causing bodily harm, was beaten to death Sunday night, RCMP and prison officials said yesterday. David Tavares, 40, of Thunder Bay, was found severely assaulted in the recreation area at the medium-security facility about 10:45 p.m. He was pronounced dead a short time later at the Institutional Health Care Centre, said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Steve Colwell. No other injuries were reported, Stony Mountain spokeswoman Aimee Fortier said. "He was killed in the bathroom of the rec hall because there's no cameras or monitors there," a prison source told The Sun, adding bathroom attacks are common in the 526-prisoner institution. "A lot of time when assaults happen that's where they happen because there's no camera." Tavares, who was about 5-foot-8 and 170 pounds, had strong ties to the Native Syndicate aboriginal street gang, sources said. |
