| Neb. prisons director proposes budget to address staffing crisis |

LINCOLN, Neb. —Nebraska's Corrections Director asked for $96 million to fix the state's prison system Thursday, the same day a scathing new report detailed a staffing crisis and problems with overpopulation. Scott Frakes announced the two-year budget package Thursday after meeting with state lawmakers. If approved, the proposal would allow the department to hire roughly 164 full-time employees in a variety of jobs, and increase the department's total general budget to nearly $223 million. The proposal requests money for security personnel, health care providers and a grant writer to seek outside funding. Frakes says the prison's employee turnover rate has been as high as 32 percent annually, and addressing that problem will solve many of the department's other issues. Read More. |
