| Okla. prison riot leaves 1 dead, 5 injured |

At least one inmate was killed and five others were seriously injured Tuesday in a gang-related prison riot at the Cimarron Correctional Facility in Cushing, Okla., prison officials said. KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City reported that six inmates were taken to Cushing Medical Center with various injuries -- including one inmate who was in critical condition. Eight others were kept at the prison's medical facility for treatment. Department of Corrections spokesman Jerry Massie told The Associated Press that the violence broke out in a recreational area at the private facility, which is operated by Corrections Corporation of America. He said as many as 50 or 60 inmates might have been involved in fights. Prison officials said the fight was started shortly before 1:30 p.m. by an inmate who used a baseball bat to beat another inmate. Several other inmates joined the fight, which took about 10 to 15 minutes to break up, officials told KOCO. CCA spokeswoman Louise Chickering did not release the name of the slain inmate pending notification of his family. Chickering said two gangs were involved in the fight, but she did not identify the gangs. CCA is a Nashville-based corrections company that has four prisons in Oklahoma, including the Cushing prison and the Davis Correctional Facility. Both prisons hold only inmates convicted in Oklahoma. According to state records, the Cimarron Correctional Facility houses about 970 inmates -- including 445 who are categorized as violent offenders. The medium-security prison was on lockdown Tuesday evening while state corrections officials investigated the fight. |
