An inmate who received life-threatening injuries while in his cell at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans has died, Vermont State Police said Sunday.

Police have not released information about how Kevin Atwood, 25, received his fatal injuries. Attempts to reach Detective Sgt. Michael Aamodt on Sunday were unsuccessful. Lt. Lance Burnham referred questions to Aamodt, the lead detective on the case. State police said in a news release Sunday that the investigation is ongoing.

Department of Corrections Director of Facility Operations Mike Touchette said the cause of Atwood's death remains under investigation. He said the Department of Corrections will also conduct an internal investigation and the Agency of Human Services will conduct a review in addition to the Vermont State Police's investigation.

State police said in the news release Sunday that Atwood died that morning after being taken off life support at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington. He had been found by correctional officers alone in his cell Thursday evening with life-threatening injuries, state police said on Friday. Corrections officers administered CPR to the man until emergency services arrived and transported the man to the UVM Medical Center, police said.
