A shootout broke out at a state prison in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, a border city, leaving one inmate dead and injuring four, police said Wednesday. Police said Omar Ortega, 45, died after being shot in the head. His cellmate Waldo Trevino, 38, and three other inmates were hurt after a brawl between rival gangs escalated into a gunfight late Tuesday. Both Ortega and Trevino were serving sentences for drug trafficking, police said. More than 200 local and federal police officers were sent to the Cereso Dos state prison to quell a riot that followed the shootout, said Guillermo Llanderal, coordinator of federal preventive police in Nuevo Laredo, across from Laredo, Texas. Llanderal said investigators searching the prison found four handguns. Authorities had not yet determined who was responsible for the shooting or how the weapons made their way into the prison. |
