Charged in the "brutal" and "savage" beating of an inmate at a state prison in Fishkill — and a “brazen” and “shameless cover up” — three former corrections officers face 45 years in federal prison while two others have pleaded guilty and are cooperating with prosecutors. Federal civil rights charges announced Wednesday by Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, stem from the Nov. 12, 2013, beating of Kevin Moore, a 57-year-old inmate, at Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill. Moore was hospitalized for 17 days after suffering life-threatening injuries, including fractured ribs, facial fractures and a collapsed lung, Bharara said. Moore was struck dozens of times, including in the face and with a baton; he was kicked in his exposed groin after his pants fell down; and he had dreadlocks ripped from his head that were later retrieved for a “souvenir,” Bharara said.
