| South Carolina to Build New Sexual Predator Housing Facility |

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina’s Sexually Violent Predator Treatment Program (SVPTP) is on track to receive a new facility following approval from the state’s Fiscal Accountability Authority (SFAA) on Sept. 20. The program is currently housed in a separate building within the Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia; however, the new facility will likely share a site with the Stevenson Correctional Institution also Columbia. The project is expected to cost approximately $41.5 million including construction and development. Since the South Carolina General Assembly passed the Sexually Violent Predator Act in June 1998, the South Carolina Department of Mental Health (SCDMH) has struggled to find space for the program, which currently houses 184 inmates and quickly reaching its capacity. The SCDMH and South Carolina Department of Corrections recently sought proposals for long-term solutions to securely house this unique population. While the RFP is currently pending final award, the proposed contractor has already provided plans for a 250-bed facility that could eventually be expanded to include 500 total beds. The planned facility will require demolition of a 50,000-square-foot housing unit at the Stevenson Correctional Institution, which was originally constructed in the 1930s. Two new facilities will be erected in its place that will together span nearly 100,000 square feet.
