Two rookie correction officers were hurt during an inmate assault on Rikers Island Tuesday, officials said. The attack happened at 6:30 p.m. at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center. Sources said two inmates, both gang members, launched a surprise attack against the two officers and seriously injured one. “The assault took place while the correction officers sprang into action to prevent one inmate from attacking another inmate during meal time,” said Correction Officers’ Benevolent Association president Elias Husamudeen.
