Ontario County Jail inmate accused of welfare fraud

HOPEWELL — An inmate at the Ontario County Jail is facing new charges after she was accused of failing to properly report her income to the Ontario County Department of Social Services resulting in the alleged larceny of $11,214.03.

Ontario County sheriff’s deputies charged Monique Barrette-Lewis, 35, with two counts of third-degree welfare fraud, a class D felony; and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony.

An investigation by police allegedly revealed that Barrette-Lewis filed applications for services in September 2015 and April 2016 that contained false information concerning her income, according to deputies. The 35-year-old indicated in the applications that she was not employed when she was employed as a home healthcare aid and cleaning homes.
