| Lawmakers ponder options for Bon Air juvenile correctional facility |

The newest residential units at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center — built in the mid-1990s during a state crackdown on juvenile criminals — lack space for therapeutic treatment of incarcerated kids who need all the help they can get. The cottages constructed in the 1960s have more space, but their T-design makes it hard for staff members to see the juveniles they’re sworn to monitor and protect. And the units built in the early 1970s, where the few girls remaining in Virginia’s juvenile facilities live, have rooms with doors that swing inward, making them easy to barricade. Read More. |
