Inmates clean up litter on roadways

TUSCUMBIA -- Inmates of the Colbert County Jail have started picking up litter from alongside county roads.

Sheriff Frank Williamson said the program began Tuesday with a retired deputy sheriff overseeing work crews of two to five inmates at a time.

"Tim Howell came back and is doing that for us," Williamson said.

The sheriff said Howell, who will work part-time, will have the inmates out for five or six hours a day.

"They've been going out every morning at about 7 a.m.," Williamson said.
