| Commissioner candidates discuss Steele County issues at forum |

OWATONNA — Candidates for three Steele County Board of Commissioners’ seats this November found themselves on opposing sides Monday afternoon as they fielded questions about the public works building, detention center, Minnesota Prairie County Alliance and Steele County Communities for a Lifetime. Incumbents Mark Schultz of District 3, James “Corky” Ebeling of District 4 and Nina Huntington of District 5 often voiced support for decisions the county board has made, while challengers Rick Gnemi for District 3, Jim Abbe for District 4 and Greg Krueger for District 5 raised concerns about the decisions and the future of the county in front of a crowded Owatonna Country Club during a candidates’ forum hosted by the Early Edition Rotary Club, Noon Rotary Club, Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism and the Owatonna People’s Press. The candidates were first asked whether they felt the county board’s decision to move forward with a $12.6 million public works building to replace the Steele County Highway Maintenance Operations Complex on Hoffman Drive that was damaged in the 2010 flood was a good idea and whether the flooding of the Straight River that resulted in the closing of the road three weeks ago changed their position on relocating the facility.
