Jail inmate in Waco dies after struggle

A McLennan County, Texas, Jail inmate taken for medical treatment died after shooting himself in the stomach with a gun he took from a jailer who accompanied him, sheriff's officials said
Timothy Jerome Standifer, who died Saturday morning following the scuffle, had been jailed since Wednesday on felony charges of aggravated kidnapping, stalking, evading arrest in a motor vehicle and evading arrest by foot, jail officials said. The 19 year-old from Waco also faced a misdemeanor charge of interfering with an emergency call.
Standifer had allegedly detained a 19 year-old woman in his house at gunpoint last Monday. The woman - who police reports indicate had a child with Standifer - escaped the house seven hours later when Standifer fell asleep.
Sheriff Larry Lynch said Standifer was taken to Providence Health Center Saturday morning for medical treatment, but would not release the nature of the ailment.
Following treatment, a McLennan County Jail employee put ankle shackles on Standifer and was trying to place handcuffs on the inmate's wrists when a scuffle ensued, Lynch said.
Standifer somehow grabbed the gun and shot himself in the stomach, Lynch said. The jailer was the only person in the room with Standifer at the time, Lynch said.
Standifer was taken to the trauma center at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, where he died, Lynch said.
Witnesses who watched the struggle through the room's open door said it was clear that Standifer pulled the trigger, said Randy Plemons, chief deputy for the sheriff's office. Plemons said the sheriff's office is investigating.
The jailer who accompanied Standifer on Saturday morning was a correctional officer and not a sheriff's deputy, Plemons said. Correctional officers are authorized to carry a weapon when they transport inmates outside of the jail, he said.
The sheriff's office would not release the jailer's name. Plemons said the jailer had been placed on paid administrative leave pending completion of the investigation.
