An inmate with relatives in Michigan is on trial in Arizona on charges stemming from a 2004 prison hostage standoff. Ricky Wassenaar told jurors last Monday he took part in the takeover because he wanted to be transferred closer to his family. Prison officials agreed to transfer the convicted armed robber to a Wisconsin prison -- in a deal that ended the two-week standoff on February-first, 2004. Wassenaar's sister, Renae Olszewski of Baldwin, helped with negotiations. Wassenaar and another inmate released a male officer after a week, but held a female officer until the end of the siege. She alleges both inmates raped her, a claim Wassenaar denies. |
