| Corrections must fill mental health staff positions |

At a special legislative committee meeting Wednesday, lawmakers heard news that wasn’t a surprise to anyone. The state’s prison system is struggling to hire enough mental health care staff to offer services to all of the state inmates in need of the help. This comes on top of a shortage of corrections officers. Currently, 35 behavioral health jobs in the prisons are unfilled. There are simple, clear reasons why many of these positions are vacant. First of all, they are extremely tough jobs. Prisoners aren’t the most cooperative, trustworthy people. That’s not always true. Some sincerely want help.
