| Prison issue looms large for Southern Illinois politicians |

When it comes to criminal justice reform, state lawmakers seem to be moving toward bipartisan cooperation. But the issue remains a contentious one in Southern Illinois. Gov. Bruce Rauner has a plan that would cut prison populations by 12,000 prisoners — about 25 percent — over the next decade. The plan would reduce costs while addressing the state’s overcrowding problem. A September 2015 study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) found that Illinois’ prisons stood at over 150 percent of their intended capacity. John Jackson, a visiting professor at the Southern Illinois University’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, said the thinking has shifted in recent years across party lines. Read More. |
