Female prison inmates donated more than 104 feet of their hair last week to create wigs for ill children. The 313 inmates at the Arizona State Prison Complex - Perryville paid $20 each for the haircuts and also donated extra money to the non-profit Locks of Love program. Combined, the inmates raised more than $6,000. "We are encouraged by the number of inmates participating in the Locks of Love program" Denny Harkins, warden of the Perryville prison, said in a statement. "It's a chance for many of these women to do something positive and give back to the community." The hair will be used to make custom-fitted wigs for financially disadvantaged children suffering long-term hair loss from medical conditions. Last year, state prison inmates donated 144 feet of hair to the organization. |
