EDWARDSVILLE — A judge Monday sentenced a self-described “Pontiac assassin” to 50 years in prison after hearing evidence that he and other inmates severely beat two prisoners. Otis Howard Harris, 24, of Alton, previously was convicted Aug. 17, 2014, of charges of home invasion, armed robbery and possession of a stolen vehicle. Harris told a Madison County Jail staff member he was a “Pontiac assassin” because he had a history of attacks on corrections officers in Pontiac Correctional Center, where he served time for a 2011 conviction for home invasion. “He is proud of his fighting in jail,” Assistant State’s Attorney Crystal Uhe argued. She argued that, not only did he brag about fighting in prison, he fought with a Madison County jail guard shortly after being jailed in the 2014 case, after being out of Pontiac, a maximum security prison, for only two months.
