| Shawnee County Jail officials work to expand mental health service delivery |

Shawnee County’s corrections department administrators are developing a more robust mental-health intervention program for inmates that could evolve to feature a 50-bed unit at the jail serving people suffering from psychosis. Lack of funding for community services and insufficient space at state hospitals leaves the Shawnee County Jail and other municipal corrections leaders to deal with inmate populations more likely to struggle with mental impairments than in decades past, said Brian Cole, director of the corrections department. “This is a bigger problem than we thought,” Cole said. “The problem is, once they get in the system, it’s tough to get them where they need to be.” Read More. |
