Inmates keep ancient art form alive

DEER LODGE — Somewhere on the sprawling grounds of the Montana State Prison and other facilities within the Montana penal system, a group of inmates is keeping an ancient art alive one hitch at a time.

And some say they are learning something about themselves, developing a new skill, regaining self-esteem, figuring out how to manage money and time, tapping into their artistic side and honing patience.

And, they note, it’s the perfect craft for people with a lot of time on their hands.
