A San Juan (N.M.) Juvenile Detention Center officer is in jail after supervisors at the center began investigating his strange behavior. Supervisors never thought the investigation would lead to criminal allegations of gang involvement and solicitation for murder. A "powertrip," according to the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, is what led David Nicholson to set up a gang behind the closed doors of the juvenile detention center. Officials first became aware of Nicholson's activities when they caught him on tape leading inmates into a supply closet and then laughing and patting them on the back when they got out. Police said the closet turned out to be where gang fights and promotions took place. "Once they were in the gang, they were encouraged to fight for rank," said officials. The guard allegedly had the gang set up in a military-type structure, where he had captains, lieutenants, sergeants and soldiers. According to the sheriff's office, Nicholson originally set up the gang to teach discipline, but things quickly got out of hand. "The guard had contacted some of the juveniles and had requested their assistance with attacking and killing members of street gangs that were on the outside in San Juan County," said Detective Tyler Truby, of the San Juan County Sheriff's Office. The detention center fired Nicholson shortly after its investigation. Deputies took him into custody last Tuesday night. Nicholson was charged with two counts of solicitation for murder, two counts of intimidation of a minor and 15 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. |
