Iowa prison inmate dies after altercation

DES MOINES -- Michael Whitworth, an inmate assigned to the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison died Oct. 30 while at University of Iowa Hospitals, the Iowa Department of Corrections is now reporting.

Whitworth, 46, was hospitalized due to an incident that occurred at the penitentiary on Oct. 20. Whitworth was transferred to the University of Iowa after the incident.

The incident involved an altercation between Whitworth and inmate Lha Southideth-Whiten, 35. The incident remains under investigation and has been referred to the Lee County Attorney’s office for prosecution. There were no staff injuries.
