A former "materials handler" last week pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to having sexual intercourse with two female inmates and sexual contact with a third woman inmate inside the Federal Detention Center in Center City, Pa. Theodore E. Woodson, 33, of Millville, N.J., remains free on bail pending sentencing for what are considered to be minor crimes, or misdemeanors. Woodson lost his prison job, which paid more than $23 an hour, because of the admitted sex, which took place between June and September last year. He is facing up to six months in prison under estimated sentencing guidelines. "We have zero tolerance for any kind of activities of that nature," prison spokesman Ken Arnold said last week. Neither Woodson nor his court-appointed federal public defender, Kai Scott, could be reached for comment. Woodson is the second worker at the Federal Detention Center charged in the past two months with having sex with inmates. The other defendant, a 29-year old female "contract" phlebotomist whose job was to draw blood from prisoners, allegedly was engaging in sex with a male inmate in 2002. She awaits trial. In both cases, authorities withheld the names of the inmates who engaged in the sexual activity, and wouldn't say why the inmates did it or if they have been punished in any way. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons opened the 11-story, 628-cell prison five years ago. The $90 million facility was built mainly to house both male and female inmates awaiting trial and sentencing in the federal courts across the street. |
