The largest graduating class in the Department of Correction’s history — 711 recruit officers — took the oath of office Friday morning at the Christian Cultural Center in East New York, Brooklyn. Commissioner Joseph Ponte also announced that 3,000 officers and captains — as well as the new recruits — have undergone 24 hours of special defensive tactical training in an effort to promote safety in the city’s jails. “There will be good times and bad times,” Ponte told the new grads Friday morning. “But through it all, we have to have each other’s backs.
